THIS EXPERIMENT IS ALL ABOUT THE STORY OF A CHEF. MEET YEISON BERTENS, A DUTCH FOOD ARTIST WITH A BEAUTIFUL STORY. A STORY THAT HAS BEEN SITTING ON A SHELF, WAITING TO BE TOLD. THE MISSION WAS TO TELL HIS STORY IN AN INNOVATIVE WAY, WHICH RESULTED IN A MULTI SENSORY TASTING EXPERIENCE.


IT’S A MULTI-COURSE STORY, EACH COURSE CONSISTS OF A DISH THAT IS ENRICHED WITH AN AUDIOVISUAL EXPERIENCE, COMPLEMENTED WITH SCENTS THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE STORY. THE MENU IS A JOURNEY ON IT’S OWN THAT TELLS US ABOUT YEISON’S LIFE, FROM A COLOMBIAN ORPHAN TO A MICHELIN STAR CHEF.

THE PROCESS OF EATING IS A COMBINATION OF ALL OF OUR SENSES. FIRST WE OBSERVE WITH OUR EYES, THEN WE SMELL BEFORE WE TOUCH AND FINALLY WE TASTE THE FOOD THAT WE EAT. BUT THE EXPERIENCE OF TASTING GOES BEYOND OUR REGULAR SENSES. OUR BRAIN MAKES ASSUMPTIONS. THING LIKE MEMORIES, GOOD AND BAD, INFLUENCE OUR OBSERVATION OF FOOD. EMOTIONS ARE VERY IMPORTANT WHEN IT COMES TO OUR PERCEPTION OF TASTE.

THE GOAL FOR THIS EXPERIMENT WAS TO CREATE A STORY THAT EVOKES EMOTIONS, TAKING YOU ON A JOURNEY THROUGH SOMEONE'S LIFE. WE DID THIS BY DESIGNING DISHES THAT TELL THE STORY, TOGETHER WITH HIGH QUALITY VIDEO AND BINAURAL AUDIO, ACCOMPANIED BY A VARIETY OF SCENTS THAT CAN BE DIFFUSED AT CUSTOM TIMECODES, WE CALL IT THE UNIVERSAL SMELLYVISION 13, BECAUSE THIS ONE CAN SPREAD UP TO 13 SCENTS. 

THE COMBINATION OF AUDIOVISUAL CONTENT, DIFFERENT AROMA’S AND THE FOOD THAT COMES WITH IT IS AN EXPERIMENT ON IT’S OWN. THE SCENT DIFFUSER IS A PLUG AND PLAY SYSTEM THAT CAN BE USED TO TEST DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF FOOTAGE. IT CAN BE APPLIED TO EVERY TYPE OF AUDIOVISUAL CONTENT THAT IS LOADED INTO THE MAX PATCH.
